Am I really allowed to do brand deals as a college cheerleader?
Yes - and actually you've been allowed to for a long time. Cheerleading and dance are not NCAA-sanctioned sports, which means the 2021 NCAA NIL rules that apply to football and basketball players don't govern you directly. Your school may still have its own policies in your team participation agreement, so always check those before signing anything.
What about my team participation agreement?
Your team participation agreement (sometimes called a program agreement or code of conduct) is a contract between you and your spirit program. It can include clauses about social media, outside commercial activity, and conduct standards. Read it. If something seems way too broad, talk to a sports attorney - some of those clauses don't hold up.
Can I wear my uniform in a brand post?
Almost certainly not for paid content. Your school owns those trademarks, and using them commercially without permission is a trademark issue - not an NCAA issue. Out of uniform, off campus? That's where your freedom lives.
I'm on a STUNT team. Is it different for me?
Yes. STUNT and Acrobatics & Tumbling are recognized NCAA emerging sports for women, which means you are subject to standard NCAA NIL rules. This includes disclosure requirements and prohibited brand categories. SquadFame will show you your sport-specific rules when you sign up.
I was a mascot. Can I still use SquadFame after graduation?
Yes. Your reach does not end at graduation, and neither do brand deals. Once you leave school your team participation agreement no longer restricts you. Your school still owns the costume, the character name, and the character design, so keep those out of any paid content - before or after you graduate. If you no longer have your school email, tick the box at signup and we will verify you by hand.
What does 'NIL-safe' content mean?
NIL-safe means no school logos, uniforms, team imagery, or anything that looks like the school is endorsing a brand. SquadFame helps you build content that's ready to use commercially.
Is SquadFame free?
Free. During beta everything is free and SquadFame takes 0% of anything you earn. Founding Members (first 100 verified athletes) keep 0% commission forever, even after we introduce pricing.
What do Founding Members get?
The first 100 verified athletes get: 0% commission locked in forever, a permanent ★ Founding badge, spotlight placement on our landing page and browse directory, a free professional photo/portrait shoot (subject to location and availability), and a direct line to the founders.
Do I have to be 18 or older to sign up?
Yes. SquadFame is open to athletes who are 18 or older. This is required to enter into NIL agreements and brand contracts on your own behalf.
Does SquadFame provide legal advice?
No. We're an information and tools platform, not a law firm, and nothing here is legal advice. For your specific situation, talk to a sports attorney. We'll point you to your state's NIL law and your school's compliance office.
